She has a large living space with TV and a spacious kitchen, alongside 3 large cabins, one of which is a large double aft cabin with its own toilet and shower, a spacious 2-person front cabin with its own shower / toilet room and a spacious crew cabin with 2 x two bunk beds, with private shower and toilet.

Background Lady B

Lady B is an ocean certified vessel. Her diesel tanks can hold 1700 liters of diesel with which we can sail for at least 5 – 6 days without wind with which it can cover more than 1000 miles. The water tanks are good for at least 1500 liters of fresh water. The water maker (drinking water quality) on board can make at least 100 liters per hour, enough water for a daily shower. For food storage, Lady B has 2 fridges and 1 freezer in the kitchen with ample storage capacity.

Lady B is a Hallberg Rassy 62 foot, designed by the renowned naval architect: German Frers. The Hallberg Rassy 62 is internationally renowned for its sailing qualities. With a 150% genoa, a 120% jib and a generously sized mainsail, the boat runs enough speed even with little wind. Everything can be rolled out and in at the touch of a button. With her weight of 38 tons, she sails wonderfully stable and calm, even on windier days.

Although being at the helm of this ship is a real pleasure, the well-functioning autopilot makes life very pleasant during sailing trips. All electronics are on board, including satellite telephone, to facilitate a safe and secure voyage. The battery capacity is large, and 220 volts are possible while sailing through the generator and inverter. Suspended from the davits is a 9-foot Highfield dinghy with 15 HP outboard motor that takes guests quickly and comfortably to any swimming or diving spots and is also used to bring guests ashore where possible.

During the Ocean crossing from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean a few years ago (ARC 1997) Lady B also received the first prize for the most beautiful Boat in the fleet.

Portugal and climate

Marina de Portimão, in the city of the same name on the south coast of Portugal, is currently home to Lady B. The marina located at the mouth of the Arade River is right on the mile-long golden beach of Praia da Rocha with the boardwalk with restaurants. Fresh fish, which is served everywhere at attractive prices, is truly fantastic. If desired, the area is ideal for day trips to the historic medieval town of Silves and the mountainous surroundings of the Monchique. Orange apples, lemons and figs grow on trees everywhere: depending on the season, they are ready to be picked!

Hikes along the limestone red coast with the famous caves (old sinkholes) are very popular. Faro, the capital of the Algarve, is 30 minutes by car and is also the arrival place by plane. The Algarve has a so-called microclimate. This means that due to the relatively warm seawater and the mountains in the north, there is a pleasant climate all year round.

Even in winter it can quickly reach between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius in the sun during the day. The generally moderate wind from various directions in the summer is mainly determined by the thermal effects of warming land during the day and seawater at night. This means that it is pleasantly cool to sleep at night and the wind picks up during the day. Rain is generally left to the Northern European countries; the Algarve is usually dry and sunny.

Sailing Area and Range

The Algarve and Canary Islands can be booked in the period from May to July. August and September are the months in which we visit the Mediterranean with Lady B.

The Algarve with its many (private) beaches is ideal for day trips and multi-day (weekend) sailing trips, for example to Gibraltar. From Portimão it is approximately 2 days sailing to Gibraltar. Obviously, other areas are also possible. Think of the Spanish Costas of Marbella or Barcelona for the somewhat quieter cruise sailing trip or onto the French coast (Riviera) with Marseille and St Tropez as stops.

The Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca as the most famous islands) are pre-eminently known as the holiday islands in the Mediterranean. How special it is to experience the nightlife from a berth in the harbour or in front of a beach? Normally Mallorca and Ibiza are about 5 days and nights sailing from Gibraltar. A fantastic trip under a starry night sky.

When the weather presents itself, we will cross the ocean from Portimão in about 5 days to the Portuguese Azores (Santa Cruz des Flores, Horta and Ponta Delgada) a little further up the ocean.

This island is located about 1000 kilometers from Portugal, near Morocco. The special thing about Madeira is the rugged landscape and the different climate zones. Thanks to this diversity, it is bursting with flora and fauna and makes this a true place for the adventurer.

The Canary Islands are sun-drenched and a group of islands belonging to Spain: total of 7 islands plus 1 that is fighting to become official where no roads exist. The islands are waiting for you from Portimão after about 4 days of sailing off the African coast. There is often a nice breeze, which makes the sailing trip there an adventure in itself for the advanced sailor who likes to sail a piece of the ocean.

Both the Canary Islands and the Azores are destinations that are ideal for multi-day trips between the various islands.

General Weather Information

The weather in the Mediterranean is of course excellent and warm from June to September with generally calm weather conditions. The Canary Islands are known for their warm day temperatures all year round with a bit more wind in the summer for nice sailing trips. The Azores are more adventurous because of their location in the middle of the ocean, with perfect sailing conditions, especially in June and July.

Portimão is easily accessible from Faro airport from where it is a half hour drive to the marina. Taxis are affordable, any transport can be organized by the Lady B.
